Atlanta, September 5, 2017.

The largest state in Brazil, the Amazonas, recorded the largest number of fires in August since 1998, the year in which work began on the detection and monitoring of fires in South America.

According to data from the Brazilian National Institute of Space Research (INPE), the previous monthly record had been recorded in August 2015 with 4564 outbreaks, but this month there were about 6150 fire outbreaks detected, and the average expected for the period is around of 1700 outbreaks.
This is the second consecutive month that the state of Amazonas registered record numbers of fires, in July the state also reached peak fire outbreak numbers with 1975 outbreaks of fire.

The attached map shows the accumulation of outbreaks during this month.  In the State of Amazonas it is observed that the fires were concentrated in the southeast of the state, on the border of the highways Transamazônica (BR 230) and BR 319 that connect Manaus / AM to Porto Velho / RO.
Another important concentration of outbreaks occurred in the Amazonian National Park, close to the border with the states of Mato Grosso and Roraima. It is estimated that 35 thousand hectares were affected by the fires in this area. The fires are now under control due to the strong performance of several firefighting brigades still active in the region.
