A group of 29 indigenous people from the Xerente ethnic group, in Tocantínia (in the State of Tocantins), completed their first training course for a voluntary brigade designed exclusively for women. The training involved concepts ranging from environmental education and fire behavior, to organization and safety, in addition to controlled burning and mobilization techniques.

The trained female team will now reinforce the TI Xerente brigade staff, currently comprised of 22 men. The work of Brazilian indigenous brigades has already been mentioned in a report by the United Nations (UN), the same document that called traditional peoples “guardians of the forest.”

Every year during the dry season, the region faces a high number of hotspots and fires, often reaching the forest.
