Brazilian Amazon biome sets sad record of fires, the largest number of recorded outbreaks

The month of September is not over yet, but a large number of fires have occurred in the Brazilian Amazon, and already makes September 2017 the record holder of the entire INPE (National Institute for Space Research) series of historical fire events, begun in 1998. There have been more than 48,000outbreaks of fires in 27 days. It is the largest number of recorded outbreaks in anymonth – not just September – of all time.

The outbreaks were concentrated in the north of Rondônia, the central-south of Pará, Tocantins and center-south of Maranhão, the areas known as the Arch of Deforestation, a region of intense deforestation and agricultural settlements.

Parts of several indigenous lands and areas of environmental protection, such as state parks and federal parks, have burned, which damages the health not only of the forest but also of the urban residents and the Indians who inhabit this vast area of Brazil.
