Brazilian Pantanal biome breaks record of fires for a month of April

In April 2020, the Pantanal recorded the highest number of fires in the last 21 years for this month of the year, according to data compiled by the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). According to the agency’s balance sheet, there were 784 outbreaks of fire registered last month in the biome.

The number is 1,087% higher than expected for the month. The record before this year had occurred in April 2009, when 589 outbreaks were recorded in the biome.
The situation is critical, as rainfall is below average and temperatures are high in four months. In the coming months, the trend is worsening, as there is no forecast of significant rainfall in the region.
