Scientist Carlos Nobre says that we may have a truly unfortunate year in the Amazon.

Scientist and climatologist Carlos Nobre, who is also an advisor to World Environmental Conservancy  (WEC), informs us that we may have a very dangerous combination in the next burning season in the Amazon, which starts in August and runs through November.

In a recent interview on the UOL website , he stated that if the number of fire outbreaks is large while Covid-19 is spreading across the Amazon region, there will be an enormous risk that people will suffer from respiratory diseases due to smoke, and end up competing with coronavirus patients for hospital vacancies. That is why it is necessary to keep monitoring the fires in the region in order to mitigate the effects smoke will have on people.

WEC maintains updated bulletins on burning in the Amazon that can be accessed through the link: https://worldenvironmentalconservancy.org/project/monitoring-fire/
