Amazonas State has record number of fires

The state of Amazonas, the largest state in the Brazilian Amazon, recorded a historic number of fires for the month of August, according to records that began in 1998 at INPE (National Institute for Space Research – Brazil). As of August 27, 6145 fires were recorded, which surpasses the previous record of 2005 when 5,981 fires were registered in the month. The current record represents a 116% increase from the average expected for the month and this figure is expected to rise further because the month is not over yet.

August is usually a dry and very hot month in the Amazon. For September, which is equally hot and dry, more than 2,600 outbreaks are expected in the state, which is an unusually high amount. All attention, monitoring and combat must be intensified as a result of what has occurred in August.
