Brazil records in July 2019 a 15% drop in the number of fires in the Amazon.

Data from the National Institute for Space Research – INPE Brazil detected a 15% reduction in the number of fires in the Amazon biome compared to the 1998 to 2018 average.

The data is from INPE- Programa Queimadas, which analyzes satellite images that detect fires almost in real time. According to the report, the total number of fires in Amazonia in July was 5,318, with the expected average of the month being 6,286 fires. Most of the fires that occurred in July 2019 were concentrated mainly in the municipalities of Apui / AM (667 fires) and Porto Velho / RO (295 fires).

It is important to note that August is the beginning of the burning season in the Amazon, so monitoring and enforcement must be maintained to continue this pattern of reduction in the number of fires in the region.
