An category 3 explosive cyclone hit the Orcadas Base this morning.

This cyclone, which originated in the southeast Pacific near the coast of South America, passed through the cities of Punta Arenas and Ushuaia with category 2 strength on the Bergeron scale and gust winds that reached 67 mph (29 m/s). However, when entering the Strait of Drake it gained intensity and hit the Argentine Base of Orcadas, on the island of the same name, with category 3 strength.

This type of cyclone (category 3) is rare, and this is the third case this year from a list of 78 cyclones in the Antarctic continent. Since 1991 there are only 3 other cases of category 3 explosive cyclones in the Strait of Drake and adjacent areas.
